Each year traumatic injuries are responsible for about half the deaths of children age 1 to 14 years. The leading cause of injury is blunt trauma (motor vehicle accidents, pedestrian, cyclist and falls) while other mechanism include burns, drowning, poisoning, penetrating trauma and child abuse.
Initial Treatment-The early priorities in the evaluation and treatment of a pediatric trauma victim is to focus on adequate airway, ventilation and intact cardiovascular system(A,B,C’s). Patients who are unconscious or unable to protect their airway should be immediately intubated. Venous access is then obtained and intravascular volume deficits are corrected.
